The brain consists of cells that grow old with the individual. Only a small part is replaced when they deteriorate. The brain is easy to get sick and difficult to repair. To ensure the function and ensure the integrity of motor skills, sensitive-sensory and cognitive functions of each of us, it must:
- know and eliminate the causes of damage, in order to prevent them
- protect the brain to safeguard the structural and functional integrity of the nervous system
- repair the damage as soon as it has been established
The knowledge of the causes and the molecular and cellular mechanisms that lead to nerve and glial cells death is necessary for the development of treatments and therapies aimed at slowing the progression of disease and to repair injuries.
IRET works in this direction through the use of disease models constantly renewed to adapt to new knowledge, with the latest technology and always in a holistic view of disease: from molecular mechanism to the function, according to the molecular mechanism.
IRET specific purposes are:
- To develop innovative and integrated strategies for prevention and protection of the nervous system
- To counteract the progression of neurological damage, protecting the surviving cells
- To promote the repair of neurological damage, also through innovative and integrated strategies including the use of endogenous and exogenous stem cells
The final objective is to improve the quality of life of patients and reduce the incidence of disability due to degenerative diseases of the nervous system.
